Labour Day weekend at my house meant time to get school supplies ready. My Mom has the most impeccable printing of anyone I’ve ever seen, and she carefully labelled all of my school supplies. And I do mean ALL of them. She would shave a little bit off the side of my pencil crayons and then carefully write my name on the wood. Of every pencil crayon. I’m serious.

But guess who came home with (most of) her pencil crayon stubs at the end of the year? Also… guess who still insisted on a brand new box of (unlabeled) pencil crayons for the next school year?

My Mom was thrifty, and she knew that a great way to save money was to not have to replace things all the time. Sadly, the universe gave her a daughter who lost (and still loses) everything. But at least with a name firmly attached to most of my belongings, many would make their way back to me.
